Andre Anisimov's
hardwood Icons and Eggs
are meticulously hand painted recreations
of classical Russian icons.
|
Icons have been described as "a song of faith to man's spiritual power to redeem himself
by beauty and art.
They speak of the Russian love of life, humor and compassion.
Lively scenes and brilliant colors create a dynamic art that is new
and exciting to American eyes, yet full of the history and tradition
of a thousand years of Russian culture.
Each egg and icon is carved from the finest hardwoods, painted with
extraordinary detail in rich color and enhanced with gold leaf.
A single egg or icon takes up to ten days as it progresses through many
steps of painting and finishing.
Anisimov studied and painted icons in his native Russia, developing
a passion for this rich tradition which is easily recognized in his
skilled artistry.
Besides earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Graphic
Design in Moscow he also studied in the tradition of medieval craftsman's
guilds to learn the authentic techniques of magnificent form of expression.
Andre has worked in theater and publishing in Moscow, and now practices
his art in San Francisco, where he organized the studio.
This is where he developed his new style by combining both traditional
and modern techniques.
Andre presented the art of traditional icon painting at California
Academy of Sciences, in February and April 1994.
His meticulously hand painted icons and eggs have been displayed in
many churches, museums and private collections.
For example:
Downey Gallery, Santa Fe, NM;
St. Thomas More Church, San Francisco;
